Bronx ZooThe Bronx Zoo is one of the most popular locations in New York City. It is located within the confines of Bronx Park, and is the largest zoo that is located in the United States. The Bronx Zoo has a total of 265 acres, which features a number of different animals and exhibits that are available to visitors. The zoo is known for its huge assortment of animals. The land that the Bronx Zoo is located on was originally owned by Fordham University. The land was eventually sold, and became the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. The University asked for only $1,000 for the land, with the understanding that the city would build a zoo and a garden on the property. The university feared that the rapidly expanding urban development would soon start to encroach on the school, and the zoo and garden allowed the school to create a buffer zone between them and the development that was taking place. Today, the zoo contains more than 4,000 different animals, which are part of more than 650 species. Many of the species that are located within the park are featured on the endangered or threatened species lists. Some of the exhibits, including the World of Birds and World of Reptiles, are arranged by the type of animals that are contained within them. Others are arranged by the area of the world in which they are located, giving the zoo a unique experience. The Bronx Zoo made headlines in 2006 when they agreed to take a rare breed of snow leopard, who was named Leo, into the park. The cub was found stuck in a mudslide that had occurred in Pakistan, and was looking for a zoo who would take him in. The cub went through quite a few months of rehabilitation before it was released into the park to roam free on its own. The zoo was also recently selected to be the home of four bear cubs that had been abandoned by their mother, who may have been killed during flooding and mudslides. The Bronx Zoo, being the largest zoo in the world, has a special place in the New York City landscape. With over 4,000 animals, the location remains a popular location for tourists, sightseers and locals. Because of the efforts the zoo has taken in the way of conservation, they have received a number of awards. |
