New York Times Square

Times SquareTimes Square in New York City is the most visited tourist attraction within the confines of the city. Located in the borough of Manhattan at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, the lengthy square stretches two blocks by thirteen blocks.

The location is home to some of the most well-known shops and stores in New York, and is also the home of the famous Broadway plays. The location was formerly known as Longacre Square, but was renamed in April 1904 after the New York Times relocated to Times building, which at the time had been freshly constructed.

The square is easily accessible, and there is a plethora of different Times Square Hotels. The New York Marriot Marquis Hotel is located in Times Square, and is known as one of the best world-class hotels in the city. Most Times Square hotels are upscale, but the location is also home to a number of moderately priced hotels with a few cheap Times Square hotels available as well.

Times Square is easily recognizable because the theaters located on Broadway are home to many neon lights and signs. The signs have become part of the image of the location, and these signs are accompanied by advertisements. In fact, building owners within Times Square are required by zoning ordinances to display illuminated signs for their businesses and locations. Today, Times Square very much resembles Las Vegas, due to the bright lighting and dense crowds that linger in the area.

In 1992, an effort by the Times Square Alliance began to raise the quality of business and cleanliness of the area. This attracted many new businesses to the area, including some of the largest television talk shows in the United States including “Good Morning America.” The face of Times Square has remained the same throughout the renovation process, but the area has become increasingly more grandiose.

Times Square is also known for its New Year’s Eve celebration. Each year, the dropping of the New Year’s Eve ball is celebrated and broadcasted around the world. The practice first began on December 31, 1907 when the first ball was dropped to mark the beginning of the New Year. Even on the first attempt, hundreds of thousands of people arrived the celebrate the coming of the new year, and today it stands as the largest New Year’s Eve celebration in the United States.

Some of the more renowned landmarks and attractions within Times Square include the Coca-Cola Sign, Times Square Studios (which is home to “Good Morning America”), and One Astor Plaza (which is the headquarters of MTV’s New York division.)

Times Square offers tourists so much to do that it is impossible to see it in its entirety throughout one day. While the location itself is not all that large, it is jam-packed with entertainment and sightseeing opportunities. Times Square is engrained in American culture, and has become a symbol of our thriving businesses and wealth. Tens of millions of people visit the location each and every year, making it the most popular tourist attraction in New York City.
